Assessment of Intellectual Functioning

Intellectual impairment, often referred to as a learning disability, manifests as a developmental disorder that is present before adulthood. For an individual to be clinically classified as having a learning disability, they must meet the following criteria:

• Significant impairment in intellectual functioning, AND

• Significant impairment in adaptive behaviour/social functioning, AND

• Onset of symptoms before adulthood

While assessments can be conducted at any life stage, it is imperative that all three criteria are satisfied to confirm the presence of a learning disability.

Adherence to best practices mandates the utilisation of standardised assessments administered by trained clinicians, involving input from both the individual being assessed and individuals familiar with them.

£1,200 inclusive

If the individual does not have significant impairment in cognitive functioning, they do not have a learning disability and assessment of adaptive functioning is not required. In such instances an assessment of cognitive functioning alone would cost £825 inclusive.

Additional travel expenses may apply to all services.

Assessment of Capacity

In accordance with the Adults with Incapacity (Scotland) Act 2000, an individual is deemed incapable of making decisions for themselves if, due to mental disorder or physical disability-induced communication impediments, they are unable to:

  • Act

  • Make decisions

  • Communicate decisions

  • Understand decisions

  • Retain memory of decisions

For a comprehensive understanding, the individual must appreciate:

  • The requisite action or decision

  • The rationale behind the action/decision

  • The probable outcomes or consequences of the decision

  • The potential repercussions of not making the decision

  • Alternative choices and options available

Capacity is presumed unless disproven. Assessments are tailored to the specific decision in question and vary accordingly. An evaluation of intellectual functioning typically forms an integral component of this process, with a comprehensive report provided subsequently.

Due to the individual nature of these assessments, costs will be provided following discussion.
